Although it seems to be an understood given that politicians are frequently corrupt and involved in scandal, there's another point of view to bear in mind about the usual sordid scenarios. Ona Russell invites the reader in O'Brien's Desk to consider the story of a typical moral dilemma faced by such a politician. From there it's not too difficult to see from whence came the exposure; but what about the attitudes and judgments of the constituents and those who thrive on exposing such "unforgivable" behavior? This novel will raise more questions than provide answers but it is a vital tale in today's cynical society. The story concerns an Ohio politician, Judge O'Brien O'Donnell, fondly called "Obee" by his friend and colleague, Sarah Kaufman, a Jewish probate officer. He seems ill at a time when most men would be deeply fulfilled, newly married and a new father. Sarah's warm friendship leads her to investigate what seems to be suspicious circumstances. When Pandora's box is opened, it unleashes blackmail about homosexuality, bribery, murder, and corruption galore. What's more is that Sarah's investigation is discovered, moving the target of her investigation to threaten Sarah and her family as well. But the criminal mind is so frequently unprepared for someone with greater courage, an unsuccessful but driven reporter determined to get his story and stop the cycle of retribution. Masterful, Ms. Russell! Readers, send it to your favorite - or not so favorite - politicos and get your friends to read it as well! Reviewed by Viviane Crystal on June 18, 2006 |
